Frequently Asked Questions

Do you use non-nano zinc oxide?

Yes — every one of our formulas is built on non-nano zinc oxide.

Why do you use tallow in your sunscreen? Is it eco-conscious and cruelty-free?

Tallow brings vitamins A, D, E and K to the table — nutrients associated with strong, resilient skin. Its fatty-acid profile is very close to the sebum your own skin makes, so it sinks in easily and helps shore up your natural barrier.

Our supply comes from grass-fed cattle raised on regenerative pasture, with no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers involved.

Because tallow is a by-product of the food industry that would otherwise be discarded, using it cuts waste and puts far less strain on land than some seed-oil production routes.

Is there any risk of Mad Cow Disease?

None whatsoever. Our tallow is sourced from Australia, a country with no recorded cases of the disease.

On top of that, it passes through a thorough purification process that strips out proteins and any other impurities.

Why doesn't your tallow smell beefy?

We purify our tallow through wet rendering. The method relies on nothing but water and mild natural agents such as baking soda — no aggressive chemicals, no toxic solvents like hexane. Keeping the temperature low protects the nutrients and vitamins in the tallow and leaves behind no beefy odour at all.

Will it attract insects?

No. Our sunscreen is refined specifically to remove the impurities that could draw insects in.

Is it comedogenic? Will it clog my pores and cause acne?

Our sunscreen is formulated to be non-comedogenic, so it will not block your pores. Tallow is structurally very similar to the oils your skin already produces, which is why it absorbs so readily and behaves so well on skin. That said, every complexion is different, so we always suggest patch-testing any new cosmetic first.

Does it block both UVA and UVB (broad spectrum)?

It certainly does. The formula delivers genuine broad-spectrum protection, shielding you from UVA and UVB alike. UVA is what ages skin prematurely — wrinkling, age spots — while UVB is what burns it. Overexposure to either raises your risk of skin cancer.

Our active ingredient, non-nano zinc oxide, is a mineral filter that handles both types of ray extremely well. The FDA recognises it for exactly that combination of safety and effectiveness.

Is it safe for children?

Yes. It is made from natural, skin-compatible ingredients with no harsh chemicals, and formulated to be gentle on sensitive skin. It has been dermatologist-tested for use on children.

Why not just make sunscreen at home?

How you mix it, the particle size of the zinc oxide and the final texture all change the SPF dramatically. With a homemade batch you simply have no idea what protection level you have ended up with.

When the consequences can be as serious as skin cancer, knowing for certain that you are protected matters.

How often should I reapply, and is it water resistant?

Reapply roughly every two hours while you are in the sun. If you have been swimming or sweating, put more on as soon as you have towelled dry. It holds up for up to 90 minutes in water.

Does it work with makeup and the rest of my skincare routine?

Absolutely. It is non-greasy and absorbs beautifully, which makes it a very good primer under makeup.

It also plays nicely with the rest of your routine — vitamin C, moisturizer and so on. In fact, it doubles as a rather good moisturizer in its own right.

Is your sunscreen HSA/FSA eligible?

Yes. You can find the full details on this page.

What is the texture like?

Think of it as a rich, easily spreadable cream. It leaves skin feeling nourished rather than greasy.

What is the tube made of?

The brown tube is waterproof kraft paper — an eco-friendly, safe alternative to conventional packaging.

The aluminium tube is exactly that: aluminium, lined on the inside with an inert, safe epoxy resin coating so the sunscreen never touches the metal itself.

Where does Sky and Sol source its tallow, and why is that eco-friendly?

Our tallow comes from regenerative pastures in Australia, where the cattle are 100% grass-fed and grass-finished and the land is never sprayed with pesticides. Farming this way rebuilds soil health, locks carbon back into the ground, and keeps the tallow itself pure and free of toxins.

Where is the expiry date, and how long does the product stay fresh?

You will find the expiry date printed on the back of the product. Stored properly — somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sun and heat — it keeps for three years. Because we use no synthetic preservatives, freshness really does depend on how you store it. Once opened, we recommend finishing it within 12 months for the best experience.

Why is this sunscreen hard to wash off?

Because it is water-resistant, which is rather the point — it stays put and keeps protecting you. A sunscreen that rinses away at the first splash probably is not doing its job. To take it off properly, use an oil-based cleanser, or a gentle scrub with soap and water.

Is your tallow environmentally friendly?

We source exclusively from regenerative pastures — farming systems built around rebuilding soil health, growing biodiversity and drawing carbon out of the atmosphere naturally. That approach supports climate resilience and creates a more balanced environment where livestock and wild nature can coexist.

HSA & FSA payments with Flex

What is Flex, and how is it connected to Sky & Sol?

We have partnered with Flex so that customers can put their Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) toward eligible purchases. That means paying with pre-tax dollars on qualifying products, which can work out to roughly 30–40% in net savings depending on your tax bracket.

How do I pay with my HSA or FSA card?

Add eligible products to your cart and head to checkout. Choose “Flex | Pay with HSA/FSA” as your payment method, enter your HSA or FSA debit card details, and finish checking out. If the Flex option is missing, you are most likely signed into Shop Pay — select “check out as guest” or open an incognito window to see every payment option.

Can I split payment between my HSA/FSA card and a credit or debit card?

Yes, Flex handles split payments. If your HSA or FSA card cannot cover the whole order, put the available balance on it and pay the remainder with a credit or debit card at checkout.

What if I do not have my HSA or FSA card to hand?

You can still choose “Flex | Pay with HSA/FSA” at checkout and pay with a credit or debit card. Flex will email you an itemised receipt that you can submit to your HSA or FSA provider for reimbursement.

Why can't I see Flex as a payment option?

Nine times out of ten it is because you are logged into Shop Pay. Log out of Shop Pay, or check out in an incognito or private window, and every available payment method — Flex included — will show up.

Why was my HSA or FSA card declined?

HSA and FSA cards behave like debit cards, and the usual culprit is insufficient funds. Get in touch with your HSA or FSA administrator to confirm your balance and eligibility.

I sent my Flex receipt but my FSA provider wants more information. What now?

Forward us the request from your FSA provider and we will work with Flex to put together whatever additional documentation they need.

I never received my Flex email with the itemised receipt. What should I do?

Check your spam or junk folder first — these emails are often filtered automatically. Flex normally sends from notifications@withflex.com. If it is nowhere to be found, contact support@withflex.com and include the email address you used for the order.

My receipt total does not match what my HSA or FSA was charged. Why?

This usually happens when a cart mixes eligible and non-eligible items, when a split payment was used, or when discounts and taxes get allocated across payment methods. Contact us and we will go through the charges and come back with an explanation or a correction.

Is sales tax covered by HSA or FSA funds?

Yes. Sales tax on eligible items is covered. Where a cart contains both eligible and non-eligible items, or where a split payment was used, tax is allocated proportionally by item eligibility and payment method.

My HSA or FSA claim was denied. What should I do?

We always suggest confirming eligibility with your provider before buying, since employer-sponsored FSAs can impose restrictions beyond the IRS guidelines. If you think the denial was a mistake, send us your provider's response and we will review it with Flex and advise on next steps.

Can I buy now and claim FSA reimbursement in a later year?

That comes down to your specific FSA plan. Most require the purchase to fall within the active coverage year, though some allow a short grace or submission window. HSAs work differently and generally permit reimbursement at any point, including future years. Check your plan documents to be sure.

Can past purchases made without Flex be reimbursed?

It depends on your account type. HSA holders can submit an itemised receipt for reimbursement at any time. FSA holders normally need the purchase to have fallen within the same calendar year as their coverage. For the least friction, we recommend using Flex at checkout for any HSA or FSA purchase.
